A year-end checklist for bookkeepers: December statements, loan and asset details, inventory counts and contractor information needed to close the year and prepare 1099s.

Use this template

Free. Once it's in your account you can rename it, add or remove items, and change anything.

Each job is named
"2026 year-end close"
Usually repeats
Every year

Ask the client for

  • December bank and credit card statements

  • Year-end loan statements

Showing the balance and interest paid for the year.

  • Receipts for equipment or vehicles bought this year

Anything that may need to be treated as a fixed asset.

  • Inventory count at year end

Only for clients who carry inventory.

  • W-9s for contractors paid this year

Any contractor we do not have a W-9 for yet.

  • Confirm owner contributions and draws

Your steps

  • Reconcile all accounts through December 31

  • Prepare and file 1099s

  • Send year-end reports to the tax preparer

Tips

  • Start this in early December so W-9s are in before 1099s are due at the end of January.
